Weekly Inspiration

As I mentioned earlier this week, I’ve been a busy little writer-chick lately. SO MANY STORIES. I can’t type fast enough. There’s always the frustration that the story I’m telling isn’t living up to the one I envisioned, but all I can do is keep writing. Writing’s awesome that way: the more you do it, the less you suck. Kind of like most things in life, right?

In no particular order, here are a few things that got the creative juices (I wonder if it’s only romance writers who smirk whenever they read that phrase. Or if it’s just me…) flowing this week:

1. Binders and Spider-Man notebooks. I love back-to-school time, even though my kids are all homeschooled and we don’t tend to need a whole lot because we buy stuff all year long. But this is when you can get a crapload of Ultimate Spider-Man notebooks really, really cheap. And what better to keep notes in for a superhero romance series than a superhero notebook, right?

2. Rachel Aaron’s 2K to 10K is a great book for any writer who wants to be able to write faster, while still maintaining the quality of their work. She has a lot of great tips, some of which I was using already, and some of which I plan to start trying. I’m a pretty fast writer most of the time. When I’m really going on a project, a 5K word day is not unheard of. But with so many projects in the works, I want to make sure I’m making the most of my time.

3. Marjorie Liu’s X-23 run for Marvel. My husband bought me all of the trade paperbacks back when I started getting into comics, and I still look through it every once in a while. X-23 was a huge inspiration when creating Molly. In fact, I dreamed of Molly one night after spending an evening re-reading X-23, and it still inspires me when I feel myself floundering as far as Molly’s character goes.

4. Exercise. I know this seems totally out of place, but hear me out. I’ve been exercising again this week, and I’m always amazed at how much my confidence and energy increase after working out for a few days. I take those thirty minutes each day to listen to Eminem cursing like the master of the f-bomb he is, and working out sticky plot points, and I feel like I can tackle just about anything.

5. My kids. Their writing project the past two weeks for school has been to create the characters, backstory, setting, and outline for a superhero story (they’re kind of doing it along with me as I work on Strike Force.) They worked so hard, and they had a lot of fun, and it helped remind me that the most important thing with this writing thing is to have fun, to lose myself in the joy of making shit up, and that if I’m not entertaining myself first, no one else will be entertained either. They did an awesome job on their stories, and have both decided that these initial stories are only the first in a series they’re going to write. Love it!

    Good advice! I bought the ebook, and read the first part of the book. I love her logic, and I’m trying it out on my non-fiction work. Some of it I read and was like, “Oh yeah, that is true…” Sometimes you need someone to lay out what you always knew before you KNOW it. 😉

    Exercise is also good advice… I really need to start exercising again. Started the year well, but then got sick, and then never restarted.

      Hi Rachel! I had the same experience reading it, those “Oh, duh. I knew that!” moments. 🙂 Glad you’re enjoying it. Yeah, it’s hard when you get knocked off your exercise routine.
